GIVE IT TO: age 2+

SUMMARY: At bedtime, five little piggies have fun while Mama Pig thinks they are in bed.

REVIEW: Super cute for bedtime! I read this to my own little piggies (boys, ages 6 and 8), and they LOVED it! We compared it to what they do at bedtime (wild rumpus) and how the little piggies found a soft spot (Mama's bed) at the very end. Love the rhythm and rhyme as well.

This one is a new favorite, one that I know will be requested again and again. Perfect for ages 2+.

ILLUSTRATIONS: Colorful, but not loud. Soft pastel colors are great for bedtime. My boys especially loved seeing the baby pig and what he was doing on each page.

ACTIVITIES FOR HOME OR CLASSROOM:

  • Language Arts--Demonstrate onomatopoeia (words formed from sounds--zip, boom, crack, etc.)

  • Music--use simple musical instruments or make some from household objects to create the sound words in the story. Examples that would work for this story: STOMP (stomp feet on floor); THUMP (drum, tupperware lid, tamborine), OINK (bass harmonica, snorting), CRICKS and CREAKS (wood guiro), TOOT (whistle, recorder), BOOM (drum, empty oatmeal box), SCRITCH and SCRATCH (fingernails scratching lightly on book cover), TAP (snapping)

  • Music, Reading--Rhythm and rhyme--Have children clap or snap to the rhythm.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Recommended for children of all ages. Perfect for bedtime
